What is alopecia?

Alopecia is the lack of pre-existing hair growth, triggering a decrease in hair density. Therefore, normal hair loss (when approximately one hundred units per day fall) should not be confused with alopecia, which is a decrease in hair density over the entire surface or local area of ​​the scalp.

Despite what many believe, hair does not grow one by one, but is formed within the follicular units. In each follicle there are from one to seven hairs, but the average is recorded in two point two. Likewise, each area of ​​our skin is made up of one and four follicles.

The hair cycle

Each of the hair follicles that the hair contains goes through three phases:

1-Anagen phase:It is the stage of hair growth. The hair follicle is healthy, its cells are permanently active and the hair grows in a linear fashion. During this period, the hair bulb (area of ​​the follicle that acts as a support or retainer for the capillaries, the follicular canal and the cells) firmly adheres to the papilla (small conical elevation at the base of the hair follicle) and receives blood supply obtaining the nutrients and oxygen necessary to maintain its viability. This stage includes a period of about three years between 90 and 95% of our hair on the head is in this phase.

Also, the length of the hair is determined by this stage. The more, the longer our hair will be.

2-Catagen or regression phase: The hair follicles begin to detach from the dermal papilla, thus losing its supply and forming the appearance of hair fibers. That is, the activity of the follicle cells ceases, so the hair stops growing and promotes its subsequent fall. Approximately 1% to 2% of the hair is in this stage, which usually lasts about 2 weeks.

3-Telogen phase: it is the last stage of the hair's life cycle. The follicle stops working completely and the hair gradually falls out. The telogen or resting phase usually lasts for three months before the hair stops growing forever. Approximately between 5 and 10% of the hair is in it.

After this phase, as the root has remained, the follicle is capable of regenerating other hair, starting again the anagen phase and in this way the growth of new hair.
